No MO' Monkey Face

No MO' Monkey Face

There are very few animals cuter than a monkey.  They're smart, sweet, intelligent, and have no naso-labial folds.  Ever noticed that?  Monkeys have this lower face that is rounded and somewhat protuberant.  There are no naso-labial fold.  The nasolabial fold (NLF) is the crease that runs from the corner of the nose to the corner of your lip.  Look at a picture of a baby - all humans have NLF because it's a normal anatomic structure!
So I get patients coming in all the time for filler in their NLF.  I think the important thing to remember is that you do not want to erase a NLF and make your lower face look protuberant like a monkey - you simply want a softening effect.
You know you've been at the grocery store and seen that lady that looks absolutely fucking crazy.  😝  You want to look away; it's difficult to fathom a person WANTING to look like that.  She looks like she's puffy with large and small marshmallows throughout her face.  Someone went to town with her face and put waaaayyyy too much filler.  As you're reading this, look up at the image on the monkeys.  See the similarity between her face and theirs?
Overdoing filler in the face can make you look more like a monkey and less like a human.  It also does not fare well over time.  As the face continues to age, if certain precautions have not been taken during filler placement, lower facial aging can actually be accelerated.
I think the key to any filler in the face is absolute moderation and thoughtful planning.  Everything does not need to be thrown into the mix at once.  Take your time.  Get one area done - make sure you love them before considering additional filler.
At Beauty Box MD we are seeing a tremendous synergy between tissue optimization (making your skin awesome with products and/or lasers) and filler.  When you make the skin awesome you get such a great result with filler; you also get more bang for your buck.  Less is always more, so when the skin is great, we need less filler.
I don't know about you, but as I age I want to be known for having great skin.  I don't want anyone looking at me thinking "She's had a lot of shit put in her face."  #hardpass
